Instructions
  1. Rinse the sardines under fresh cold water to remove any dirt or debris. For particularly large sardines, you may want to gut them, but smaller sardines can often be dehydrated whole.
  2. Pat them dry using paper towels.
  3. (Optional) If you're going to season the sardines, do so now. Lightly salting the sardines can help preserve them further and enhance the flavor.
  4. (Optional) Lay the sardines flat and sprinkle with your chosen seasonings. Remember, dehydrating concentrates flavors, so you don't need to use too much seasonings.
  5. Using a non-stick mesh mat arrange the sardines on the dehydrator trays, ensuring they don't overlap. This will ensure even dehydration.
  6. Set the dehydrator to 145°F (63°C) and dehydrate for 12-24 hours. The exact time will depend on the size of the sardines. You'll know when they're done when they are completely dry to the touch, and no moisture come out when you break them.
  7. Once completely dry allow the sardines to cool down to room temperature before storage.
Storage Instructions:
  1. For maximum storage length store your dehydrated sardines in a vacuum sealed Mylar bag with an oxygen absorber. Store in a cool dark place like a cellar for 2-4 years or a freezer for up to 10 years. (Always trust your senses. If something smells, looks, or tastes off, it's best not to consume it)
Notes:
  1. Dehydrated Sardines make a great snack on their own or can be rehydrated in soups or stews.
  2. If you're dehydrating the sardines for a pet treat, we recommend skipping the seasonings.
